ALS TDI was founded by the family of someone with ALS to help find treatments and advance research into the causes of the disease, which are still mostly unknown. We do it all with funds donated mostly by people with ALS and their families and friends. We work to discover treatments in our lab, and also evaluate the effectiveness of treatments discovered by others, all with the goal of getting therapies into clinical trials. Drugs we discover or validate, having been proven promising and possibly profitable, can then be handed off to for-profit companies capable of raising the hundreds of millions of dollars required to run human clinical trials.  Even preclinical drug research is very very expensive though – so every dollar counts. Any help you'd be willing to provide will get us closer to finding a cure for this devastating disease.
