Riding for those who no longer can.
270 miles-Boston to NY
For the fifth time, I am getting on my bike in Newton, MA on 24 June and starting the Tri-State Trek. I really love the team camraderie and the personal goal achievement I get from it.
But our real goal, of course, is to raise as much money as we can to fund ALS research. Since I last rode, 6,000 Americans will have been diagnosed with ALS. While much research progress has been made, there is still no known cure. Most doctors will advise the newly diagnosed to put their affairs in order.
Our job will not be done until a cure is found. That need, reinforced by the facts below which were included in my previous years’ letters, is why I continue to ride in the Tri State Trek, the Ride to End ALS:
• 450,000 people live with ALS globally, 30,000 of whom are in the U.S.
• Any disease impacting less than 200,000 in the U.S. is considered a rare disease, affecting the level of funding for research into a cure.
• The average life span for someone diagnosed is around 5 years. The lack of long term survivors also impacts fundraising for research.
• THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENTS OR CURE for ALS.
The Trek supports the ALS Therapy Development Institute and represents close to 10% of the ALS TDI annual budget. Thanks to the support of many of you, our team, Crush ALS/Team Bannon, raised over $172,000 for the cause in 2015. That's an increase of over 35% from the prior year and collectively our team’s cumulative fund raising will exceed $500,000 this season.
I ride for Betty Anne (Margot’s mom). But I also ride now for a broader ALS Community: Chuckie Bannon, Congdon’s family, Steve Saling, and the huge network of folks living with the disease right now.
The riders, those that they ride for, and the doctors and staff at ALS TDI, are truly inspirational. It is rewarding to see our team grow and our fund raising efforts flourish for such an extraordinary cause.
The 270 mile, three-day bike ride, from Boston to Greenwich, takes place June 24-26, 2016. I am asking that you support me as we make our way through the winding hills of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
Many of you are business associates as well as friends. My compliance department would appreciate it if you would limit your contribution to $1,000.
I am very appreciative of your support.
